We Always Bounce Black

We Always Bounce Black ask you to join them in celebrating 65 years of live comedy with The Second City's Black Excellence Revue! This unique comedy club showcases an all-Black ensemble of talented writers and performers, honoring the spirit of Black History Month. "We Always Bounce Black: A Black Excellence Comedy Revue," packed with fresh sketches and original songs, will keep you laughing all night. This revue brings together a cast of alums from Second City's esteemed stages, delivering joy and much-needed laughter to brighten up even the coldest nights. Under the direction of celebrated Second City alum Anthony LeBlanc, the show features an incredible lineup of both iconic alumni and rising stars, including Spencer Hodges, Kaleb Jackson, Wanjiku Kairu, Terrance Lamonte Jr., Daryn Robinson, and the standout Brittani Yawn, whose improvisational flair is sure to steal the spotlight.

There were some scripts in the revue that had the audience laughing with the Black Excellence Network (BEN) world, where the entertainment begins with hilarious skits, engaging game shows, and timely scripts that African-Americans can relate to, while whites in the audience have fun being a part of the performance being asked questions that could never answer. Or participate in "Say My Name," a lively segment where you must guess the identities being teased by the cast, or enjoy "Do You Ever Think About," where two cast members, Brittani Yawn and Spencer Hodges, explore a variety of thought-provoking scenarios.

Regrettably, the scripts struggled to capture the audience's interest, leading to an uncomfortable silence in the air, in contrast to the lively atmosphere typically found in a comedy club. This stillness, which should never be present, felt flat, with some scripts feeling like the laughter had been drained from the room. The cast is entertaining. Nonetheless, the chemistry between the performers falls short of the delightful comedic spark seen in their earlier productions. "We Always Bounce Black" runs for two hours with a 15-minute intermission. With performances exclusively on Fridays and Saturdays, this is the perfect opportunity to experience a night of joy and laughter. The spirited comedy just needs a little work.
