Too Hot To Handel - The Jazz-Gospel Messiah

Known as the windy city, some Chicagoans love the cold winter nights. Still, some like it hot, and Too Hot to Handel is a concert that reimagines George Frideric Handel's Messiah with jazz, gospel, blues, and R&B warmed the souls of thousands entering The Auditorium Theater. It is an interactive concert that energizes its audiences, encouraging them to clap, sing, dance, and move with the rhythm of the music combined with exceptional guest soloists Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke, and Karen Marie Richardson with a chamber orchestra, jazz combo, and large choir. The two-part production featuring 28 curated songs has captivated audiences at The Auditorium. Blending the rich traditions of classical, jazz, and gospel music with each performance has garnered rave reviews, and this year's rendition was no different. The result was a vibrant and uplifting church celebration that resonated and filled the space with spiritual energy and joy.

The performance comes alive with the incredible husband and wife team of Rodrick Dixon and Alfreda Burke. Their captivating presence and Richardson's powerful vocals create an effective trio that's enthralling and impressive performance throughout the two hours and twenty minutes. The pianist and the orchestra were outstanding. However, the melodic and smooth playing of Alvin Waddles tantalized the soul. We had an additional treat to see several of our New Faith church members performing, featuring Fred Nelson III, performing as Organist, with Quin Anderson on the drums. The enchanting show Too Hot To Handle concluded its run this past Sunday, the 12th. After an impressive 17-year presence at the historic Auditorium Theater, you can be sure that this vibrant production will return for another year and many years to come.
