Six The Musical - 2024

The memorable phrase "Divorced, Beheaded, Died; Divorced, Beheaded, Survived" sets the stage for a captivating and explosive musical experience. It introduces an enthralling theatrical production, Six, that has been thrilling audiences in theaters worldwide. In 1970, the BBC aired a series of six plays chronicling the tumultuous lives of Henry VIII's six wives. This captivating production made its way to the US in 1971 as part of the renowned PBS Masterpiece Theatre series. Fast forward to today, the musical adaptation of this historical narrative, first presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 by talented Cambridge University students, has found its way to the grand stage of Broadway in Chicago's CIBC Theatre in 2022 and now at James M Nederlander Theatre in 2024. "Experience the unexpected thrill of witnessing the captivating and energetic performance of the 'Tudor Queens' turned pop princesses. Prepare for a mesmerizing evening as they take the stage, delivering a spectacular and electrifying pop concert that will undoubtedly leave you entertained and spellbound." The musical "Six" is a powerhouse production showcasing six divas with exceptional talents, delivering an electrifying 90-minute performance. What sets "Six" apart is its superb composition, with a fantastic score created by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, innovative, creative direction by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage, and exceptional music supervision by Roberta Duchak. The musical brilliance of Six lies in its ability to effortlessly perform globally while seamlessly integrating the talents of six remarkable and skilled women on stage —demonstrating its outstanding ability to captivate audiences worldwide.

With the incredible scenic design by Emma Baily, stunning costume design by Gabriella Slade, and mesmerizing lighting design by Tim Deling, combined with the talented all-female band featuring Jane Cardona, Sterlyn Termine, Rose Laguana, and Kami Lujan, "Six" delivers an electrifying and unforgettable musical experience. I hope the Broadway of Chicago focuses on improving the sound quality in their theater, as inadequate audio can detract from the impact of live musical performances. In a captivating historical narrative, the 'Tudor Queens' are tired of the endless debates over which of them was the most significant wife of Henry VIII. A lighthearted competition ensues as they vie to demonstrate who suffered the most in their relationships with Henry VIII, with the ultimate victor being celebrated as the leading lady among them.

In the historical play, we are introduced to the six wives of King Henry VIII. The story starts with Catherine of Aragon, who staunchly refuses to be replaced after her 24-year-long marriage to Henry. Despite spending seven years in prison, she persevered as Henry's first wife, making her the longest-serving queen. However, their marriage was ultimately annulled. Next in the spotlight is Anne Boleyn, a bold and enchanting figure who ultimately faces a tragic end. Known for her allure, she engaged in the same political games as Henry, only to meet a grim fate—she was beheaded. Anne's story has made her the most renowned of Henry's wives due to her dramatic execution. Following Anne is Jane Seymour, a queen who silently endured great suffering. Despite the challenges, she truly captured the heart of King Henry VIII and ultimately died during childbirth, leaving behind a male heir. Her poignant "Heart of Stone" ballad illustrates her deep love for the king. Then arrives Katherine Howard, who unfortunately sought love in all the wrong places. Her narrative unfolds as one of abuse by various men who capitalize on her misplaced feelings of affection. This ill-fated "Queen Diva" met her end with a beheading and execution in Tower Green, London. Lastly, we meet Catherine Parr, the only wife who survived to tell her tale. Forced to marry the king despite being engaged elsewhere, she deftly maneuvers her circumstances and emerges as Henry's widow. Her bold and audacious song "I Don't Need Your Love" showcases her resilience as she becomes a living testament to the unyielding strength of all six wives.

The North American premiere of "SIX" landed at the Chicago Shakespeare stage in 2019, featuring nine musical numbers like Ex-Wives, No Way, Don't Lose Ur Head, Haus of Holbein, Get Down, All You Wanna Do, I Don't Need Your Love and Six, With an energetic celebration of twenty-first-century female empowerment, shining the spotlight on the queens of the night Aragon, Boleyn, Seymour, Cleves, Howard, and Parr in The Yard.  At the James M. Nederlander Theatre, these six queens' alter-egoes were executed to perfection by Leopold, Ailva, Taylor Mendoza, Evans, and Scalice, who rocked the house. "Six" is a musical extravaganza that offers an electrifying and inspiring experience from start to finish. The blend of history, powerful performances, and captivating music creates a remarkable and unforgettable spectacle. It's a musical adrenaline rush.
