A Chorus Line

Who would have ever thought that a musical concept about a line of dancers set on a bare stage would win nine Tony Awards and become one of the longest-running Broadway musicals; ever? Well, the answer is James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante. Their book, A Chorus Line, where dancers are given a voice, still dazzles audiences with its glitz precision dance performances.

With music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban, A Chorus Line's intense backstage look from the dancers' eyes with dreams of making it to the Broadway stage details the challenging life of being a dancer. If you succeed, it can make a career; however, failure can break the soul of a dancer —causing one to think about what you would do if they could no longer dance. To find dancers for the chorus, director Zach and his assistant choreographer Larry put 24 dancers through rigorous and stressful paces to determine if they are ready for Broadway.

During the audition, he surprises them by asking questions seeking to reveal personal information or events about their lives, to divulge where their passion is and what made them want to dance. As Zach is in the process of completing the first round of cuts to get to an eight-member chorus of four boys and four girls, he has to make a difficult decision about his ex-girlfriend Cassie (Sara Andreas), once a successful solo dancer, is now down on her luck and has a complicated relationship with Zach. He must determine if he can put his emotions aside about Cassie to decide whether she is suitable for dancing in the chorus.

Michael Bennett's famously conceived 'A Chorus Line' opened Off-Broadway on April 15, 1975, until April 1990. Based on taped interviews of Broadway dancers sharing their personal stories, it was the longest-running show on Broadway until Cats.

The cast provided solid performers, but Martin Ortiz Tapia as Paul's emotional story about his turbulent childhood to manhood and discovering his homosexuality reached the audience's soul.

Alley Ellis's singing (At The Ballet) was sensational, Sam Linda was outstanding as Mike and the duo of Jordan Taylor and Trey Deluna performing the comedic song, "Sing," was spectacular. And I always enjoy seeing the incredibly talented Sawyer Smith (Bobby), who shines in every performance.

Sara Andreas's dance routine (The Music and The Music), where Cassie confesses that her solo career hadn't panned out as planned, needed to be more flashy and polished and lacked personality.

A Chorus Line two-act production with songs, I Hope I Get It, Sing, and its most famous musical song, One, runs approximately 2:25 and includes one intermission — and is a thrillingly entertaining, witty, and heartbreaking musical that gives dancers a voice!
